About Tora Do Ryu JiuJitsu and Judo

Tora Do Ryu (way of the tiger school) was founded over 30 years ago, and was brought to Monash University by Renshi Tony Pappenfuss when he was a graduate student in the mid-1990s. Renshi Tony passed responsibility for the academy to his student, Sensei Tim, when he retired from martial arts in 2010.

Our academy has taught JiuJitsu and Judo to numerous generations of students and members of the local community. The academy is open to all, with a healthy mix of new and long term members. Many members who started as undergraduate students continue to train here after completing their academic studies.

Our teaching emphasises cooperative learning, friendly competition, technical excellence, and realistic self-defence in a safe and fun environment.

Who trains here?

Most of our students are young women and men studying at Monash University. Many Monash alumni continue to train with us after graduating.

Adults and older teenagers who are not studying at Monash are also welcome to try out and train at Tora Do Ryu.
