What you need for your first class

You do not need to buy a uniform or any equipment before you begin.

What to wear

Wear track pants and a T-shirt, or comfortable activewear you can move in. Long pants are recommended for mat work.

We will lend you a martial arts jacket and belt.

What to bring

Bring a filled water bottle and a bag to keep your personal belongings together beside the training area.

On the mats

Training is barefoot. Leave shoes at the edge of the mat, remove jewellery and tie long hair back before class starts.

Tell your teacher about any injuries before class.

NO SURPRISES

What to expect

Every class is a little different, but your first visit will follow a simple, supportive rhythm. You will never be expected to know what to do before it is explained.

A friendly welcome

Meet your teacher, see the training space and let us know about any injuries, concerns or questions.

Warm-up and safe movement

The class usually begins with mobility, warm-up activities and an introduction to safe falling and rolling.

Learn with a partner

A teacher or experienced student will help you throughout class, learning techniques in a controlled, cooperative way.

You set the pace

Starting any new form of exercise is going to be hard on your body. Work at your own pace. It is always okay to ask a question, take a break or slow down.

A familiar face before your arrive

Meet your teachers

They’ll welcome you when you arrive, show you around and guide you through the class.

A few helpful answers

Before your first class

Do I need any martial arts experience?

Not at all. Your trial class is designed for beginners, and your teacher will explain each activity before you try it.

Can someone come in with me?

Of course, the more the merrier. 🙂

What should I do with jewellery and long hair?

Leave jewellery at home or remove it before training. Tie long hair back and keep fingernails and toenails neatly trimmed for safe partner practice.

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. Fitness develops through training. Work at a comfortable pace, take a break whenever you need one, and let your teacher know if you have any concerns.
