THINKING

Just like a regular class...

We as teachers will pose questions to you. And as per normal, there isn’t always a straight forward answer. Lots of times it’s the pondering, the searching for an answer, the THINKING that is the point.

  • Sometimes those questions will be about content in other sections of the course.
  • Sometimes there will be content specifically for questioning here on this page.
  • Sometimes questions will be self-reflective in nature.

During the course questions posed will be added here for you to come back to and reflect upon. As your knowledge grows, so too does your understanding. So remember to check back in with questions you think you answered previously to see if you view has changed.

Answers don’t need to be submitted back to us but as always, we’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

LAPD1

By now, hopefully you've checked out the LAPD Training video in the CONNECTING section? If not, you should. If you have how closely did you watch?

  • Can you list all the techniques that are from our syllabus?
  • Can you see any techniques that aren't in our syllabus?
  • Are there any applications you haven't seen or done?
  • Do you think they would work in this day and age?

Let us know what you come up! And why don't you try visualising the self defence applications you like.

THINK DIFFERENT

One of the challenges we face on our road to becoming a real martial artist is trying to learn something you don't know, without instruction or guidance.

Kancho said one of the hardest things for him to overcome was to be masterless.

When you begin training the road ahead, although difficult is clear. You have grade guides, seniors to follow, Sensei to question. There's a clear path and a support net work to help you get moving on the path.

But as you progress, the road becomes less clear. There's more contradiction, less guidance, more open ended questions. At  blue belt you don't have a grading guide to memorise.

When you get to blackbelt there's no defined syllabus for you to tick off and measure your progression.

  • So how do you progress in this situation?
  • Why do we teach this way?

BLACKBELTS - Competition scoring

The DLP presents a great opportunity for Blackbelts to refine their competition spotting and scribing skills! Below are two download links to score sheets for you to print and fill out as you watch the Randori videos in the moving section. Sheet 1 is our standard scoring sheet, which you will be familiar with. Sheet 2 is a new format we are testing. So please use both on different bouts so we can compare. Try to include counter techniques and if possible combos. Make sure you use the score sheets on the first watch of the video and without pausing to simulate more accurately a real scribe/spotting experience. Once you're done upload your scoresheets through the Questioning section form along with your thoughts on the experience and difference between the two forms.

Visualise your Reflex Self Defence

Over the course of the Distance Learning Program we will releasing different Reflex Self Defence worksheets for various attacks found in our syllabus. The goal is simple. Use your visualisation skills to think up as many different ways to defend yourself using the Building Blocks of JiuJitsu, and the write them down. When you've filled up a sheet submit it via the questioning section for feedback. We will then collate all publish the list so you can try other students' defences and see if there's something you haven't thought of.

We have started with 5 different attacks from 12th kyu to 7th kyu. If you're a more senior grade, challenge yourself by trying to defend yourself only using techniques from 6th kyu and above.

Our goal is to collate as many different defences as possible, so feel free to fill out more than 1 sheet! Once we get back to physical training we'll also review all these defences.

Thanks for taking part in our Distance Learning Program.

Stay tuned for more content over the coming weeks.
